What are polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)?

PCBs can be liquids or solids, usually clear or yellow in colour without any odour or taste. These are mixtures that are stable and resistant to high pressures and temperatures, which is a large part of the reason why they were used widely in electrical, industrial and construction applications.

PCB presence and exposure

After many research studies were conducted, PCBs were discovered to cause cancer in animals and classified as a human carcinogen. They can also negatively affect the human immune system, nervous system, reproductive system and endocrine system. Exposure comes from ingesting contaminated food or water, breathing in contaminated air, or having direct contact with PCBs on your skin or in your eyes.

As a result, they were banned from use in 1979 and commercial production ended in 1977. However, since they persist and do not readily breakdown, it is estimated that over half of the PCBs produced years ago have since been released into the environment through spills, leaks, and improper storage and disposal.
